El Sueño brings flavoured Tequilas to Wetherspoons

Tequila brand El Sueño has created Moda, a range of premium flavoured expressions that has launched into all Wetherspoons venues across the UK.

Moda Tequila forms El Sueño’s flavoured range, which is presented in a line-up of ‘distinctive’ chrome bottles that aim to bring ‘a noticeable burst of colour and flavour' to spirits shelves. The range has launched with three flavours: pineapple, pink grapefruit, and watermelon. All are priced at £35 (US$45) per 700ml bottle, and rest at 35% ABV. In October, Moda Tequila secured a listing with Wetherspoons, bringing Moda Pineapple Tequila to more than 800 pubs and bars across the UK and Ireland. The listing launched in time for the Halloween weekend, promoting a seasonal menu of shots and mixed drinks. The launch comes as the Tequila category continues to gain market share in both the on-trade, where sales grew by 6% in the second quarter of the year, and in retail, with Waitrose reporting an 86% sales increase in 2024. Two-thirds of Tequila consumers are reported to be aged 18-34, and opting to drink it in shot form. The brand notes that this is ‘a young, engaged customer base with an appetite for trying new drinks’, that is ‘heavily influenced’ by culture and social media. The maker of 100% agave Tequila brand Vivir created the El Sueño brand in 2021 to cater for the growing demand for ‘affordable, high-quality, sustainable’ Tequilas that are ideal for mixing. Paul Hayes, co-founder of Vivir and El Sueño Moda Tequila, commented: “Bringing Moda Tequila to market signals that this spirit category is increasingly maturing in the UK as audiences come to better understand Tequila. “Consumers are now seeing how enjoyable the spirit can be; that it can retain its fun image while genuinely tasting great and being pleasant to drink, whether that’s as shots or in mixed drinks.” The spirit is produced from estate owned Blue Weber agave, which is grown for nine years in Jalisco, Mexico, and sweetened with piloncillo, a natural Mexican cane sugar. Using a mix of traditional hornos and autoclaves to cook the agave, the result is a ‘bright and vibrant’ base Tequila, which is then blended with flavours derived from 'real' fruits and sweetened with agave syrup. It is described as a very ‘palatable and smooth’ spirit, suitable for young adults that enjoys the social experience of drinking shots with friends, and the ease of creating refreshing long drinks with the addition of lemonade.
