Clase Azul adds to mezcal range
Mexican brand Clase Azul has launched its third mezcal expression, named San Luis Potosí.
The new product joins its Durango and Guerrero mezcals. Each expression in the range is inspired by a particular Mexican state. San Luis Potosí is in Mexico’s Central Plateau, where communities of mezcal producers have passed techniques down through generations for more than two centuries. The new mezcal is made using green agave – agave salmiana – which is native to the region. It is produced in Estación Ipiña, a small community of around 250 inhabitants; the brand said around one-fifth of the area’s population works in mezcal production. The regional process involves steam cooking the agave in vaulted stone ovens, milling it in a Chilean mill and double distilling it in copper stills. Viridiana Tinoco, Clase Azul México’s master distiller, said: “We’re delighted to introduce a spirit that’s so deeply rooted in the history and landscape of its place of origin. “The generational wisdom safeguarded by the mezcal-producing community of Estación Ipiña, San Luis Potosí has given rise to a distinctive mezcal. Its unique aromatic and tasting notes reflect its traditional craftsmanship and capture the essence of the green agave used in its production.” As with all Clase Azul’s spirits, the mezcal is packaged in a decanter handmade by Mexican artisans. For the San Luis Potosí expression, the brand has selected a deep-red decanter to pay homage to the Huachichil, nomads of the region’s desert landscapes who adorned themselves in red dye. The decanter’s cap is hand-embroidered with coloured yarn to represent a mythical red finch. The 43% ABV expression will be available in specialist and luxury retailers with an RRP of £360 (US$455) for a 700ml decanter. As well as its usual Tequila and mezcal range, Clase Azul releases an annual Day of the Dead expression.
