Adriatico ages amaretto in Planteray casks
Italian amaretto brand Adriatico has unveiled its fourth limited edition expression, aged in Planteray Fiji rum casks.
Owned by Bellaventura, the new Adriatico Roasted Amaretto Planteray Rum Cask was made in collaboration with Maison Ferrand-owned Planteray rum and is limited to 2,600 bottles. For the release, Adriatico aged its roasted amaretto for eight months in ex-Planteray Fijian Rum casks, creating 'an intense amaretto with nuances of classic rum flavours'. Jean-Robert Bellanger, co-founder of Adriatico Amaretto, said: “Planteray is a leader in the rum category, producing original blends and single cask rums from around the world. "We found that the Planteray Fijian Rum casks enhanced Adriatico Roasted Amaretto beautifully. We decided to trade our Roasted Amaretto casks with the founder of Planteray, Alexandre Gabriel, so that he could age his Barbados single cask rum in our Amaretto casks and so that we could use his rum casks to age our Amaretto, creating a fantastic limited edition rum and amaretto. "The result is a cosy amaretto with hints of spices and strength.” The release follows previous expressions aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels, Caroni Rum casks, and Bonollo Grappa casks. The limited edition will be available in the UK, France, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, Spain, Germany and Switzerland. The suggested retail price is £45 (US$58), and the bottle comes in an FSC-certified gift box. Adriatico Roasted Amaretto Planteray Rum Cask will be available from Fenwick stores in the UK via the brand's UK distributor Amber Beverage Group. Owners of Bellaventura, Bellanger and Thomas Benoit, launched the liqueur brand in 2019. Adriatico is produced in Puglia, Italy. Returning the favour As part of the collaboration, Maison Ferrand has also used Adriatico Amaretto casks to age its Barbados Single Cask Rum from 2017. This will be the first time rum has been matured in an ex-amaretto cask. The Planteray rum is limited to approximately 1,500 bottles. Fannie Thibaud, head of creation and experimentation at Maison Ferrand, said: "It was essential to have a very intense rum to complement the intensity of the amaretto. Amaretto is quite sweet, so we needed a rum that was more tannic and structured to achieve a nicely balanced palate. "Additionally, the almond and sweet orange notes pair perfectly with the coffee and toasted flavours of the Fiji rum, with slightly animalistic notes that further enhance the marriage of these spirits.” Last month, Planteray Rum released a Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry cask-finished version of its 20th Anniversary XO rum. In January this year, the name of the rum brand was changed from Plantation to Planteray.
