Edinburgh’s Old Curiosity Distillery has partnered with local hotel The Balmoral to create a new Scottish gin, called Baile Mhoireil. The partnership between The Old Curiosity Distillery and The Balmoral has been “two years in the making”. “We are so proud to partner up with The Balmoral to create this truly beautiful gin – it has taken time, many experiments and a passion to deliver and as we are only six miles away, it doesn’t get more local than that,” said Hamish Martin, founder of The Old Curiosity Distillery. “It is also brilliant to be able to showcase what botanicals can be grown here in Edinburgh.” The new gin, which translates in Gaelic as ‘majestic dwelling’, is inspired by Scottish landscapes. Baile Mhoireil features botanicals such as rosemary, dill, sage, chamomile, anise and lemon verbena, which have been hand harvested by the Edinburgh distillery. Described as having “hints of subtle citrus notes”, the gin is recommended served with tonic water, dried grapefruit, a sprig of rosemary and a spritz of lemon verbena. Cameron Matthews, The Balmoral’s gin ambassador, said: “It was our vision to create a sustainable gin while supporting this incredible local supplier. “Gin has become a very popular spirit and we are seeing more discerning customers asking for a specific flavour profile. “After two years of development with The Old Curiosity Distillery it has been a privilege to create our own spirit in order to meet the needs of our guests. “The bottle design is a nod to the hotel’s history and will also make for a beautiful memento for our guests." To celebrate the launch of Baile Mhoireil, The Balmoral is offering a gin-tasting experience with cocktails created by Matthews. Baile Mhoireil (40% ABV) is available to buy from Bar Prince in The Balmoral hotel for £12.50 (US$16.30) per 50ml bottle or £47.50 (US$62) per 500ml bottle. In February last year, The Old Curiosity Distillery launched its Gin Garden Tours, which offered guests the chance to explore its working botanical garden.
